HOW TO STAND OUT IN A CROWD

HOW TO STAND OUT IN A CROWD

LEAVE NO ROCK UNTURNED!!

  1. Your suit
    1. Cut of the suit must accentuate your body.
    2. Send pictures of yourself in a 2 piece to your suit designer
    3. Get swatches and compare them against your features
    4. Men- Make sure the suit doesn’t cover up your glutes and make sure it fits!
  2. Hair and Make up-ladies
    1. Consult with a make up professional. Visit  Ten Steps to Fitness Competition Stage Makeup, for step by step instructions on how to apply stage make up.  Angelica has years of experience in stage make up and if you are local, she is available for many shows. and does a phenomenal job.  If you are not local, she can teach you how to do your own stage make up from start to finish including what products you will need!
    2. Most shows have make-up and hair professionals so inquire about cost and make an appointment early to secure a good appointment time!
    3. Remember that you cannot bring your own make up professional to the show if the show promoters have a contract with their own professionals but certainly can have your make up done in your hotel by a non-contracted make up professional with stage experience.
    4. Hair Color: Now time is probably not a good time to try something new.  Do not dye your hair the same color as your suit or do something drastic.  You want to stand out but not as the competitor who is coined as “the purple people eater” because their hair, suit, and nails were all purple.  Stick with a style and color that you have gotten many compliments on in the past and try not to go too bright.  This is especially important for blondes.  The lights are very very bright and you don’t want them reflecting off of your hair and blinding the judges.
    5. Hair style: Most judges like long, flowy hair BUT if you have a short spikey hair style or something different that fits your personality and beauty then by all means wear that style with confidence (not a wig or hair extensions that go all the way down your back and get in the way).  Also keep hair out of the face and any hair clips simple!
  3. Skin Color
    1. Keep in mind that you need to BE HEALTHY to have good skin tone!
    2. With the improvement of spray tans and the threat of skin cancer, many competitors show up to tanning with no base tan, which is fine. The formulas used now are very strong and absorb well into the skin.  If you decide you want a base tan, begin tanning no less than three weeks out- try to ONLY tan precompetition for the health of your skin.  Tan 3 days per week for three weeks using an accelerator and if possible in beds that minimize burning.  Keep skin moisturized each day.  Stop tanning one week out.
    3. Exfoliate your skin every other day the week of the show with the final light exfoliation during the last shower before your show before tanning application or follow the exfoliation directions sent by the tanning company you are using.
    4. If you are doing your own tan, Jan Tana is probably the most popular brand and they have a one-application show tan that you can apply 2-3 times if you are lighter. Some have also had good luck with Pro-tan.  Do not use tanner that has glitter or bronzer in it.  All skin colors and tones need to apply tanner!!
    5. I have never heard a judge say “That competitor is too dark!” but have seen many quality competitors come in last place simply because the judging panel could not see their physique under the stage lighting due to the fact that they did not tan or were way too light.
    6. Please match your face to your body with either tanner or make up. Many women do not spray tan their faces but instead use very dark make up to match the skin.  This is where a talented make up artist comes in because it may appear that your face matches your body in the hotel room and then on stage it may appear several shades lighter!!

      4. Stage Presence

    1. Be YOU!! Yes, many of us have a stage “persona” but let the judges see your personality shine through.  If you are naturally an introvert or shy, you will have to work on your presentation more in order to feel comfortable “selling” YOU and all your hard work but I have seen complete introverts take the stage with an energy that won them best poser and the crowd favorite!!
    2. This is not a bikini competition at a local bar or Ms. Tropicana…it is a sport so treat it that way. Showcase the poses indicated in your division and hold those poses.  Please don’t flutter through a bunch of poses with nervous energy because you have failed to practice sufficiently.  Be graceful and classy ladies.  Men, be confident and sincere…don’t be afraid to smile.
    3. Make eye contact with all judges
    4. You are being judged from the time you are standing side stage to walk on and only have a few seconds in some divisions to stand out. Ease of movement, your smile and facial expressions, and your ability to command the attention of the crowd is what separates well- prepared division champions from those who may not place.
